4 Tips To Prepare For Your Fresh 48 Session

Welcoming a new baby into your family is such a momentous time! Capturing your first photographs as a family at a Fresh 48 session is one of the things I love most about my work as a DC newborn photographer.

There is something truly unique about photographing a new family in the first few days after their baby’s birthday that made me fall quickly in love with Fresh 48 sessions. Maybe it’s the way new dad’s always swaddle their babies so delicately, or how a new mom looks at her oldest child as they hold her youngest for the first time as she imagines all of the memories they will make in the years to come.

One thing is for sure: these moments are memories your family will cherish for a lifetime!

4 Tips To Prepare For Your Fresh 48 Session

Preparing for a Fresh 48 session is easier than you might think. Below are a few tips I share with each of my clients before I arrive to their birth space.

1. Let the hospital and any visitors know ahead of time that I will be coming.

Once we set the date and time for your Fresh 48 session, let your nurse know, as well as any loved ones who may want to visit, that you’d like this time to be private for your family. It is important that only you, your spouse, your baby and siblings are present during this time to allow your entire family unit to be captured as genuinely as possible.

Hospital rooms are often small and there are a lot of visitors and hospital staff coming in and out of the room. Limiting these visits can help ensure our session doesn’t get interrupted with admin paperwork or run over time, and will allow you to get back to resting and snuggling your little one as soon as possible!

2. Think about what you want to wear ahead of time for your Fresh 48 session and pack it in your hospital bag.

Keep in mind you will be recovering from having a baby, and you should pack accordingly. Something like a soft, neutral colored robe, or comfy pajamas that are easy to nurse in is a great idea! Etsy has beautiful robe options, as does Pinkblush maternity if you’re in the market for one!

Don’t worry too much about packing for your baby, unless of course you have something special for them to wear. The classic hospital swaddles work just fine! If you have older siblings to dress, I recommend setting out their clothes for another caretaker to dress them in before they come to the hospital.

3. If at all possible, make sure to feed yourself, your spouse and your baby before I arrive.

Being well fed and hydrated after having a baby is extremely important for your recovery and for your baby! Chances are you may already be sleep deprived, so having a family member bring you food or schedule the session not long after breakfast is a great idea. Don’t stress about cleaning up the hospital room. My job is to work around these things and potentially move things around if I see fit! It is more important to be fed and as well rested as you can be!

4. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

I encourage all of my clients to relax and remember this session is about capturing your family as it is in this moment in time. If that means your hair is in a top knot and you’re make-up free, perfect! These memories are meant to serve as a reminder of how tiny your babies hands and toes were and how soft they felt, how elated you were to introduce your children to one another, or to remember how you felt the first time you saw your husband with your baby asleep on his chest and the emotions that came along with that sight.
